Dead. That one word was all that lingered in my mind like a dark, black shadow that touched each of my thoughts. Yes, she’s long gone now. Gone like the ashes flowing in the wind towards an uncertain and melancholic future. It was a house fire that killed my friend. She had burned to death. Burned. I had heard her ear-piercing shrill moments before I arrived at her house.

I was rushing over with tears in my eyes and my friend on my mind. The wind whipped through my hair like water as the smoke stung my eyes making my caged tears flow down my face freely. They only left paths of despair in their tracks. But I could only focus on the orange glow of the fire behind the black silhouette of the trees getting brighter as I got near. The smoke suffocated my lungs and they felt like they were going to collapse, but I kept running. I saw the house in view, the orange and red flame ingesting my friend’s house. Movement on the ground caught my eye. I’m too late, I thought as my breath froze in my throat. I had watched her as she tried to crawl away from the fire on her dress, on her body. I wanted to help but I felt frozen in my spot, my breath taken away like when you view beautiful scenery. This was far from beautiful though. I felt my stomach spin and I felt disgusted. She went limp. Death’s wings had embraced her fiercely before finally lifting her away from the Earth, away from her pain, away from me.

Her body was left behind, and that’s where the fire started to eat away at her like a child would eat away at a chocolate bar, quickly and without care. I couldn’t bear to watch as I felt numbness crawl to my core. My tears rolled off my face like falling stars. They fell onto the cold, hard earth beneath me with a splash creating dark patches where they landed.  My friend is dead, she was right in front of me and I couldn’t do anything for her. I felt a black hole open up inside me. It ate away at me from the inside out and, soon enough, I felt empty and horribly alone. I moved my gaze up to the house. It was now burnt to the ground, the fire slowly dying away to hot coals where, in any other circumstance, I would have been glad to feel its warmth gently roll onto me. Not now though, the warmth it casted now felt cold, like a slap in my face. I watched the fire as it casted ghastly shadows onto the burning wood and on to my friend, or what was left of her.

She had been reduced to nothing but an empty body now with the fire’s tongue licking at her like a dog. I couldn’t tear my eyes away; this was all that was left of our, no, now it was just my childhood memory. They were nothing but emptiness and ashes flowing in the wind now. Her ashes gently flew past my face and surrounded me, as if they still held part of my friend’s life and she was trying to comfort me. Lifting my tear-burdened eyes I saw a dark figure standing and watching me. Quick to blame, I felt anger towards it. Did it start the fire? Did it kill my friend? This anger quickly subsided and turned into sadness, for it wasn’t the fire that killed my friend. It was me.
Hey everyone! I was getting lots of positive feedback about uploading my novel so here it is! WARNING: YES IT IS A LITTLE MORBID IN THE BEGINNING I AM SORRY IT GETS BETTER LATER ON!

If you would like to give some feedback, or just simply comment, I'd like that very much :iconbigsmileplz:

You're description is amazingly vivid! I'm very impressed with the narration and what you have put together here. The only suggestion that I could make is the repetition of "my friend." I understand wanting to be vague in the first chapter, it tends to hook readers almost immediately, but I just don't feel that strong of a connections with that word. I feel like you should express the narrators relationship with her more. Friend can mean anything from acquaintance to someone you have known since you were a child. Looking forward to reading more :D

Thank you for your comment and suggestion! I wasn't sure how far to go into her relationship with the friend... hence why I kept it more vague ahaha thank again~

Finally got around to reading this and--WOW!! Wow!
What an impact on the reader. I don't know what it's about, but I"m already twisted into this character and it's thanks to the very illustrative writing.

Just beautiful in description alone. Great job Cutie Thumbs Up

It feels like the end of a novel. It is a dramatic start. Sometimes friends lose their temper and do stupid things. It would be interesting to see how the story develops. To kill someone is a lot to deal with. The grief and the guilt could destroy someone. Fire consumes all things. A good beginning.

That brings tears to my eyes... I am just wondering how did she kill her friend? Unless she means that she was frozen in her tracks and couldn't save her friend....or that she caused her friend to set the house on fire?

Anyway it was beautifully written. I to understand the fierce beauty of fire. A fire came within a few yards of my house once, woods surrounding my house, two story high flames would erupt for a few seconds as it engulfed a new tree. Terrifying, my sister screaming bloody murder didn't help either. But the fire trucks got there in time, I was outside soaking the grass around the house with the hose when a first responder and then the firemen and trucks got there. Scary stuff, fire is a killer. Stupid neighbor didn't put out their yard trash fire all the way and a teeny tiny spark caught and burned down many acres of forest. Sad.

Excuse me, I'm talking to much. Sorry *grins sheepishly* I love all of your work though. Your poetry is very hauntingly beautiful I must say.

heeeyyyy writing is never "bad" or "good". Each writing style is fit to each person, which makes every story unique and wonderful in its own way :)
